Today in UFW history: March 16, 1966: One of the most inspiring face offs in 1960s civil rights history occurred when Senator Robert F. Kennedy came to Delano the first time 51 years ago today for a U.S. Senate subcommittee hearing on the grape strike. He heard Kern County Sheriff Leroy Galyen testify about arresting peaceful strikers because grower foremen threatened them on vineyard picket lines even though the pickets hadn’t broken the law. As the hearing was breaking for lunch, Kennedy replied, "May I suggest that during the luncheon period of time that the sheriff and the district attorney read the Constitution of the United States?” Kennedy then visited with strikers on a picket line at the DiGiorgio ranch and spoke with them and Cesar Chavez at Filipino Hall, their union hall. A reporter asked whether Cesar and the strikers were communists. “No, they’re not communists,” RFK replied. “They’re struggling for their rights.” Robert Kennedy was the first national political figure who unequivocally embraced the grape strikers.
