Update from UFW President re Colbert & Take our Jobs

September 25, 2010

Dear UFW Supporter,

On Friday, I was in Washington, D.C. presenting testimony at a House immigration subcommittee hearing side by side with comedian and satirist Stephen Colbert, farm workers, grower representatives and other allies of the United Farm Workers-sponsored AgJOBS immigration reform bill. The room was packed to overflowing and there were reporters and news crews from everywhere covering our presentations. Stephen Colbert was amazing and so were the farm workers and their supporters. This was an awesome day for farm workers.

Finally, they are getting the recognition they deserve for all the hard work they perform day in and day out. We all need to take responsibility for changing the lives of farm workers and their families.  It was an amazing day that brought the immigrant farm workers’ experience to light through nearly 1,000 news stories from across America. Stephen Colbert makes a vital contribution for progressives in our country through the use of satire by exposing the hypocrisy of those who trade in ignorance and prejudice.

Please watch Stephen’s testimony below. Or you can click here to go to C-CSPAN to view the full two hour hearing. I especially think you’d enjoy seeing the clip below where Stephen Colbert broke out of character to explain why he decided to champion the plight of migrant farm workers.

"…It seems like [some] of the least powerful people in the United States are migrant workers who come and do our work but don’t have any rights as a result. But yet we still invite them to come here and at the same time ask them to leave…Migrant workers suffer and have no rights."

On Thursday, as part of the "Colbert Report" on Comedy Central, Stephen aired an episode called Migrant Farm Worker in which he explored how hard it is to be a farm worker. Please watch this segment and then take action by signing the AgJOBS pledge today.

Thank you for all of your support. Please help end injustices in the fields by signing the AgJOBS pledge TODAY. Encourage your friends and family to get involved too.

Thank you and Si Se Puede!
