Central Valley families & farm workers rally at Supreme Court steps for President Obama’s immigration action

Salinas, CA — Thousands of families and their advocates are traveling to Washington, D.C. to rally outside the U.S. Supreme Court in support of President Obama’s executive action on immigration. President Obama’s initiatives would allow millions of immigrants—including those who came to the U.S. as children and parents of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents—to come forward and apply for protection from deportation and obtain work permits.

UFW Foundation members are leaving for Washington D.C. on Sunday from Los Angeles to join members of Congress, other elected officials, community, civil rights and labor leaders and families eligible under the President’s executive action. Thousands of them will send a strong message in defense of the President’s immigration action that could benefit up to five million undocumented families in the nation.

The high court will decide on the future of the immigration initiatives by June 30. Governors and attorneys general from Texas and 25 other states—all Republicans—filed suit to block relief for immigrants. Programs affected by President Obama’s initiatives affect more than 2.6 million U.S. citizens living with an affected family member.

As leaders and supporters call on the justices to lift the block against the initiatives on the Supreme Court steps, dozens of cities, including Salinas, will hold local actions echoing their call and urging support for these lawful immigration programs.
